Hello in French

Bonjour, Canada

Mountain lakes, big cities and wide-open wilderness.

About Canada

Big landscapes, easy travel

From the turquoise lakes of the Rockies to Toronto, Niagara Falls and the French-speaking charm of Québec, Canada pairs vast scenery with friendly, easy-going cities. It is ideal for road trips, rail journeys, family holidays and visiting friends and relatives, and we plan the whole trip — flights, hotels, car hire and rail — with one team you can message.

Where to go

Also worth considering
Montréal & Québec City

Cobbled streets, French culture and excellent food in Canada's French-speaking heart.

Nova Scotia & the Maritimes

Lighthouses, seafood and coastal drives on the Atlantic side, via Halifax.

Culture and customs

Canadians are famously polite and welcoming, and English and French are both official languages.

Two languages. English is spoken almost everywhere, but French is the main language in Québec — a simple “bonjour” and “merci” goes down well.

Cannabis rules. Recreational cannabis is legal, but rules differ by province, and it is illegal to take cannabis across the Canadian border without a permit or exemption from Health Canada.

Drugs and ID. Illegal drugs carry severe penalties, including in airport transit. Keep your passport somewhere safe and carry a copy for ID.

Driving. Driving laws vary between provinces and territories, including whether you can turn right on a red light and whether you need an international driving permit. Watch for wildlife on rural roads.

Winter roads. In winter, highways in Alberta and British Columbia can close for snow or avalanches — check conditions before setting out and make sure your car has winter tyres.

Wildlife and the outdoors. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife, take particular care where bears have been sighted, and follow park rules on storing food.

Questions people ask

Travelling to Canada — quick answers

Can’t see your question? Send us a message or WhatsApp us.

Do I need a visa for Canada with a British passport?

Not for short visits — normally up to 6 months. If you are flying to or transiting through Canada you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead, which you apply for online before you travel; you do not need both. Use only the official Government of Canada website, as unofficial sites charge for applications. Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay, and border officers may ask to see a return or onward ticket and proof of funds.

How long is the flight from the UK to Canada?

Nonstop flights from London to Toronto take about 7½ to 8½ hours, and to Vancouver about 10 hours. Air Canada, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly from Heathrow; Air Transat flies from Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow, and there are also nonstop flights from Edinburgh, some in summer only.

When is the best time to visit Canada?

June to September is the most popular time for touring, national parks and road trips, with late September and early October bringing autumn colours in Ontario and Québec. December to March is ski season in the Rockies and British Columbia.

What should I know about the outdoors and wildlife?

Keep a safe distance from all wildlife, take particular care in areas where bears have been sighted, and follow park rules. Wildfires can start in any season and are most common in summer, so follow local warnings. In winter, some highways can close and vehicles need snow tyres.

Can Travel Style book my whole Canada trip?

Yes. We're IATA accredited, so we issue flights ourselves and can add hotels, car hire, rail journeys and tours in one booking — with one team to message before, during and after your trip.
