What we do for you

A child's British passport needs the right proof of nationality, both parents' details, a photo that meets HM Passport Office's rules and someone eligible to confirm identity. Each of these trips up applications regularly.

We work out which documents apply to your child, check them before anything is posted, check the photo against the rules and help you choose an eligible identity confirmer.

  • First passport, renewal, replacement or change of name
  • Proof of nationality matched to your child's circumstances
  • Photo checked against HM Passport Office's rules
  • Help choosing an eligible identity confirmer

Who it’s for: Children under 16 living in the UK, applied for by someone with parental responsibility

Which applies to you?

It depends on your circumstances

When you start, we go through these with you.

Who applies

Someone with parental responsibility for the child must apply, and both parents' details are given, or the reason one cannot be.

Parental responsibility
Full certificates, sent in the original

A first passport needs the child's full birth or adoption certificate, the one naming the parents, and proof of British nationality. HM Passport Office takes originals or official copies.

Originals by post
Confirming identity

The person who confirms identity or countersigns must have known the adult signing the form, not the child, for at least 2 years, and must not be a relative, partner or someone you live with.

Known to the parent
Children aged 12 to 15

A child aged 12 to 15 signs the form too.

Child signs from 12
Five-year passport

A child passport is valid for 5 years. The new passport has a new number, so any booking made against the old number needs updating.
