What we do for you

A child born in the UK to an Indian parent needs the birth registered with the High Commission of India or a consulate before an Indian passport can be issued. The application is made online, then signed and handed in with the parents' passports, the UK birth certificate and the marriage certificate.

We check the child can hold Indian nationality, complete the application, prepare the declarations for you to sign and print the photographs, so the appointment goes through first time.

  • Eligibility checked before you apply
  • Online application completed for you
  • Declarations prepared for the parents to sign
  • Can be done with the child's first passport

Who it’s for: Children born in the UK to an Indian citizen parent, who will hold Indian nationality

Which applies to you?

It depends on your circumstances

When you start, we go through these with you.

Needed before a passport

The birth must be registered with the High Commission or a consulate before an Indian passport is issued. The passport application can be handed in at the same time; the passport follows once the registration is complete.

Step one
Indian nationality only

India does not allow dual citizenship. A child who is a British citizen, for example because a parent was British or settled in the UK when the child was born, cannot be registered and applies for OCI instead. We check this first.

Checked first
Within one year of birth

Registered within a year, the application goes through normally. After a year, the parents also give an affidavit explaining why it was not registered sooner.

Late registration
One application per child

Each child has their own online application, and it cannot be changed once submitted, so we check every detail before it goes in.

Checked before submitting
If one parent is not Indian

The parents also sign a declaration that the child has not acquired another nationality.
