A first Indian passport for an adult turns on one question: how you show you are an Indian citizen. That depends on where you were born, whether your birth was registered with an Indian mission, and whether you have ever held another nationality.
We check that first, then prepare the application, put your documents in order and print your photographs, so your appointment goes through first time.
- Proof of Indian citizenship checked before you book
- Application and declarations prepared for you
- A full Indian address ready for police verification
- Photographs printed to the checklist size
Who it’s for: Indian citizens aged 18 or over living in the UK who have never held an Indian passport
It depends on your circumstances
When you start, we go through these with you.
Your application must show your Indian nationality. If you were born outside India, your birth needs to have been registered with an Indian mission. We confirm the right proof for your case before you book.
Checked firstIndia does not allow dual citizenship. If you hold, or have held, another nationality, an Indian passport is not the right route and we will point you to OCI instead.
Indian citizens onlyPolice verification is carried out at your Indian address, so we take the full address with the police station and PIN code. A relative's address can be used if they can confirm who you are.
Every first passportTatkaal is not available for a first passport without birth registration, and the Edinburgh consulate has no Tatkaal service at all.

First Indian passport (adult) — quick answers
Can I walk in to the centre?
No. There is no walk-in service. An appointment must be booked to submit the documents.
How long does it take?
Allow 8 to 12 weeks. The Edinburgh consulate gives about four to six weeks from submission, but police verification in India often makes it longer and the mission cannot speed it up.
I was born in the UK to Indian parents. Can I apply?
Only if you are an Indian citizen and hold no other nationality. Most people born in the UK hold British citizenship, so OCI is usually the right route. We check this with you first.
How are the official fees paid?
At the application centre, when you hand in the documents. There is no online payment for consular services.
Ready when you are
