What we do for you

What you need depends on why your name is changing. Taking a spouse's surname needs your marriage certificate. Going back to a maiden name after divorce needs the divorce decree. Any other change goes through a formal publication route, with newspaper notices or a gazette notification and two IDs in the new name.

We work out which route applies, prepare the affidavit and the letter explaining the change, and check every document carries the new name the same way.

  • The right route for marriage, divorce or any other change
  • Affidavit and letter prepared for you
  • Newspaper or gazette wording checked
  • Your new name checked across every document

Questions people ask

Indian passport name change — quick answers

Can I walk in to the centre?

No. There is no walk-in service. An appointment must be booked to submit the documents.

Can I use my new name before the passport is changed?

Travel in the name on your passport. Book tickets and visas in that name until the new passport is issued.

I changed my name by deed poll in the UK. Is that enough?

A deed poll on its own is not listed by the High Commission. Expect to publish the change and provide two IDs in the new name; we confirm this for your case.

How are the official fees paid?

At the application centre, when you hand in the documents. There is no online payment for consular services.
