What we do for you

A first adult passport turns on proving British nationality, and the documents depend on where and when you, and sometimes your parents, were born. Sending the wrong set is the most common reason for delay.

We match your documents to your circumstances, check your photo, help you choose an eligible person to confirm your identity and tell you what to expect if HM Passport Office invites you to an interview.

  • The right nationality documents for your circumstances
  • Photo checked against HM Passport Office's rules
  • Help choosing an eligible identity confirmer
  • Interview explained if you are invited

Questions people ask

First adult passport — quick answers

My last British passport was issued before 1994. Is this the right service?

Yes. If your last UK passport was issued before 1 January 1994, you apply as if for a first adult passport.

Can I still use my child passport?

Yes, until it expires, even after you turn 18.

I also hold another nationality's passport. Does anything change?

The name and gender on your other passport must match what you want on your British passport. If they differ, change the other passport first.

Can I use the 1 Day Premium service?

No. 1 Day Premium is only for renewing an adult passport.
