A lost or stolen passport is cancelled first, then replaced. Because there is no passport to send, your identity is confirmed by someone who knows you, and choosing the right person is what keeps a replacement moving.
We take you through the cancellation, prepare the replacement application, check your photo and help you choose an eligible identity confirmer. If you have travel booked, we check the timings with you and look at the 1 Week Fast Track.
- Cancellation first, then the replacement, in the right order
- An eligible identity confirmer chosen with you
- Photo checked against HM Passport Office's rules
- Bookings held on the old passport number reviewed with you
Who it’s for: Holders of a British passport who are in the UK
It depends on your circumstances
When you start, we go through these with you.
A lost or stolen passport must be cancelled before applying for a replacement. Cancel it as soon as possible to reduce the risk of anyone else using it.
Cancel firstWith no passport to send, someone who has known you for at least 2 years confirms your identity. They cannot be related to you, your partner, or someone you live with.
Identity confirmerThe 1 Week Fast Track service can be used for a lost or stolen passport. The 1 Day Premium service cannot.
Fast Track onlySomeone outside the UK who needs to travel applies for an emergency travel document instead. Message us and we will point you to the right route.
Different routeA passport with unreadable details, ripped or missing pages, or a damaged cover is replaced too. The damaged passport is sent with the application.

Lost or stolen passport — quick answers
Do I need a police report?
HM Passport Office does not require one to cancel or replace a passport. A crime reference can help with an insurance claim.
Will my new passport have the same number?
No. Any booking, visa or travel authorisation held against the old number needs to be updated.
What if I find the passport after cancelling it?
Once it is cancelled, the next application is treated as a replacement, not a renewal. Call the Passport Adviceline before trying to travel on it.
Can I get a replacement urgently?
Yes, through the 1 Week Fast Track service, which needs an appointment.
