What we do for you

The evidence for a passport name change depends on why the name changed. Marriage, divorce, deed poll, a change of gender and a small change to forenames each have their own list, and some include a document few people have heard of.

We match the evidence to your situation, prepare the application, check your photo and go through any bookings you already hold in your old name.

  • The right evidence for marriage, divorce, deed poll or gender
  • Your "for all purposes" statement drafted with you, if you need one
  • Photo checked against HM Passport Office's rules
  • Bookings in your old name reviewed with you

Which applies to you?

It depends on your circumstances

When you start, we go through these with you.

Marriage or civil partnership

After the ceremony, send the marriage or civil partnership certificate. You can apply up to 3 months before with a form signed by the minister or registrar: your current passport is cancelled and the new one is post-dated to the ceremony.

Before or after
Divorce or a previous surname

Send your birth certificate, your marriage certificate, a document showing the name in use, and a signed statement that you have gone back to the name "for all purposes".

Four documents
Deed poll and other changes

A deed poll, statutory declaration or affidavit, a document showing the new name in use, and proof of any earlier name changes.

Gender

A Gender Recognition Certificate, a new birth or adoption certificate, or a letter from your doctor or consultant confirming the change is likely to be permanent.

Questions people ask

Name change on passport — quick answers

Do I keep the time left on my current passport?

No. You receive a new 10-year passport, and any time left on the old one does not carry over.

Do I need a deed poll after marriage?

No. Your marriage or civil partnership certificate is the evidence.

I'm applying before my wedding. Can I travel in the meantime?

Your current passport is cancelled and the new one cannot be used until after the ceremony, so plan any travel around that. Some countries do not issue visas in post-dated passports.

Does my booking need to match my passport?

Yes. The name on your passport must match the name you book travel in.
